The USS
Michigan Marine Guard is a small but prestigious
Living History and Civil War Reenactment group. We portray
Civil War era Federal Marines. Our members are located
mostly in Michigan. We attend events primarily in Michigan
and sometimes in northern Ohio and northern Indiana. We
participate in a variety of activities including Civil War
encampments and battles, parades, dedications and school
and community presentations.

The
USS Michigan
|
|

|
| The
unit that we portray is the Marine Guard that was onboard the USS
Michigan during the Civil War. The USS Michigan was
a steam powered paddle frigate. It was the first iron-hull war
ship in the U.S. Navy . The Michigan was 167 feet long and
was put into service in 1844.
The USS
Michigan was the only U.S. warship stationed on the Great
Lakes during the Civil
War. It frequently docked in Detroit and traveled throughout
the Great Lakes. In addition to recruiting duties during the
Civil War, the USS Michigan was also used to guard the
Confederate prisoners at Johnson’s Island in Lake Erie. |
